History of the Marine Leash

Navigating Power Challenges in Marine Environments

The Marine Leash was introduced in 2010 by APC Group Inc., a U.S.-based leader in retractable power cord reels, marking the company’s expansion into the marine industry. Building on the success of earlier products like the Arctic Leash (2000–2003), MedReel (2004), and Kitchen Leash (2008), APC recognized the need for a reliable power solution tailored for boats, docks, and harsh marine environments. Traditional extension cords were ill-suited for marine use, often failing due to exposure to water, salt, and weather, while also posing safety hazards on slippery surfaces. The Marine Leash was developed to address these challenges, providing a watertight, durable cord reel that could deliver consistent power in demanding conditions.

Engineering for Marine Durability

The development of the Marine Leash involved rigorous testing to ensure it could withstand the unique stressors of marine environments, such as saltwater corrosion, constant moisture, and temperature fluctuations. APC’s engineers designed the reel with a weatherproof, retractable structure, featuring a durable polypropylene case that resists corrosion and maintains functionality in harsh conditions. Available in lengths up to 80 feet with 12 or 14-gauge SJEOOW all-weather wire and a 20-amp capacity, the Marine Leash was built to power marine batteries, maintenance tools, and electric-powered boats or pontoons. It is ETL listed and conforms to UL 1363A, UL 355, and CSA C22.2 STD. NO. 308 standards, ensuring safety and reliability for marine professionals. The reel’s flexible mounting options—on docks or directly on boats—made it a practical solution for a wide range of marine applications. It also includes a lighted single female end to indicate power status.

Empowering Marine Professionals

Since its launch, the Marine Leash has become a trusted tool for marine professionals, boat owners, and dock operators across the U.S. and Canada. On docks, it powers battery chargers and maintenance tools, ensuring vessels are ready for operation without the risk of cords trailing into the water. On boats, it supports electric-powered pontoons and other equipment, providing reliable power during long trips or maintenance tasks. For example, marina operators use the Marine Leash to charge multiple boats simultaneously, while recreational boaters rely on it to power onboard tools and accessories in wet, salty conditions. Its weatherproof design ensures it can withstand rain, waves, and saltwater exposure, making it an essential tool for marine environments where safety and performance are critical.

A Lasting Impact in the Marine Industry

The Marine Leash’s introduction in 2010 solidified APC Group Inc.’s reputation as a versatile innovator, capable of delivering industry-specific solutions. Its success paved the way for later products, such as the Seal Reel in 2018, as APC continued to expand its portfolio. Over the years, the Marine Leash has remained a cornerstone of APC’s offerings, with ongoing refinements to enhance its durability and usability based on feedback from marine professionals. Distributed through specialty distributors, contractors, and OEMs, the Marine Leash continues to empower the marine industry by providing safe, reliable power in even the most challenging conditions, reflecting APC’s commitment to engineering excellence.
